But Agassi took just an hour and 13 minutes to dispose of the Wimbledon runner-up, winning six consecutive games in the first set and breaking Rafter’s serve early in the second.The American faltered briefly in the second set, dropping his serve and swatting a ball into the crowd in frustration after giving Rafter a break point at 3-3.

Scientists claimed a breakthrough in cancer research could lead to a vaccine against leukaemia within five years. The researchers believe the presence of the flag – a short stretch of protein called a peptide – on the surface of the cells could be used to stimulate immunity against cancer to stop a tumour from growing.Professor Alejandro Madrigal, scientific director of the Anthony Nolan Bone Marrow Trust, which funded the work, said the results of the seven-year investigation into chronic myeloid leukaemia are “a major breakthrough”.He added: “In just a few years there could be a vaccine for chronic myeloid leukaemia. It could be used to treat patients, but there’s no reason why you couldn’t extend it to the general population to prevent the disease.”The study, in collaboration with doctors from the Nottingham Trent and Liverpool Universities, found that although the immune system can identify cancer cells, it cannot do much to stop them from multiplying in the body.Richard Clark, a cancer researcher at Liverpool University, said: “A major puzzle has been why the immune system does not simply destroy the leukaemia before it has a chance to grow and cause symptoms.”To our great surprise we found that a patient’s immune system was already able to respond to their leukaemia.
