WHERE IS THE BEST WHISKY ATTRACTION FOR CHILDREN? That has to be the Famous Grouse Experience (01764 656565; ) at Glenturret Distillery outside Crieff. Besides the distillery tour, there’s plenty here to entertain children as well as adults, with an interactive exhibition and a nature trail and picnic site in the grounds It opens for tours from 9.30am-4.30pm daily. Family-run Glenfarclas (01807 500209; ), also in Ballindalloch, is currently open 10am-4pm from Monday to Friday Its tours cost £3.50 per person. Prestigious Macallan (01340 872 280; ) at Craigellachie is open to visitors from Easter to October only.If the appeal of looking at copper stills has lost its shine, this area is also home to the Speyside Cooperage (01340 871108; ), just outside Craigellachie More than 100,000 wooden casks are made here each year. The area also holds a fun annual Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival, which will run from 30 April to 3 May in 2004 (01343 542666; ).The most popular tour is at Glenfiddich (01340 820373; ), just outside Dufftown; free tours 9.30am-4.30pm on weekdays. The distilleries have banded together to market themselves as a “whisky trail” (01224 288828; ). For more information on these and other attractions in the area, contact the Aberdeen and Grampians Tourist Board (01224 288828; ).If you’re sticking to whisky, Speyside has plenty of distillery tours to choose from.

One of Queen Victoria’s favourite Scottish destinations, the countryside here is more rolling than the Highlands location suggests. Many modern-day visitors come to fish on the river Spey, or to walk the 100km Speyside Way – a footpath running from Buckie on the Moray Firth to Aviemore on the edge of the Cairngorms. For an insight into what the area was like in those days, visit the town’s Heritage Centre. It opens only during summer, but you can find out more on this and other local attractions from Campbeltown’s tourist information office (01586 552056; ).The area that could more justifiably be dubbed Scotland’s whisky capital today is Speyside, across in the north-east. WHAT ABOUT THE MAINLAND? Campbeltown, on the Kintyre peninsula in south-west Scotland, was once the whisky capital of Scotland, with more than 30 distilleries. These days only two remain, but they include the prestigious Springbank, which produces one of the top Scottish malts and runs tours by appointment in the summer (01586 552009; ).Whisky once flowed so bountifully that legend had it that Campbeltown Loch was made of the stuff. It opens 10am-5pm from Monday to Friday and tours cost £2.50 (01688 302645; e-mail: tobermory10 aol ).

While you’re on Islay, take the 10-minute ferry ride to nearby Jura, the island on which George Orwell once lived and which also has a well-respected distillery (01496 820240; ).Across on nearby Mull, fans of the children’s TV programme Balamory (or, more likely, their parents) can combine a family trip to the real-life version of the town with a visit to Tobermory’s distillery. For information, contact the tourist board in Bowmore (01496 810254; ). The Islay distilleries are so integrated into local life that when Bowmore’s stills are in action, the excess water is used to heat the municipal swimming-pool.There’s plenty for non-drinkers to do on Islay too, especially birdwatchers. Loch Gruinart is known as the winter home of hundreds of barnacle and white-fronted geese, and corncrakes have been spotted on Islay too. The downside is getting there, which involves a two-hour Caledonian MacBrayne ferry ride from Kennacraig on the Kintyre peninsula (from £10.70 return; 08705 65 0000; ) or an expensive 50-minute flight from Glasgow; these start at around £70 return with British Airways (0870 850 9 850; ). WHICH OTHERS SHOULD I LOOK FOR? Seven working distilleries are clustered together on Islay: Ardbeg (01496 302244; ); Bowmore (0141 558 9011; ); Bruichladdich (01496 850190; ); Bunnahabhain (01496 840646; ); Caol Ila (01496 302760; ); Lagavulin (01496 302400; ); and Laphroaig (01496 302418; ).
